Harbor Freight a Time Rip OFf

Good evening,

While I have plenty of time and the new Harbor Freight store is on my way home, I am beginning to feel Jacksonville's store is beginning to be guilty of being a rip off city... not on prices or items, but on customers' time.

Unless you get there the first thing Monday morning or Thursday morning, the people who work in Little Rock are very unlikely to get the popular items on the freebies, such as the four-plug strip cord and the six-inch magnetic screw holder. Every time you go in there looking for those things, they never have them in the evening.

I'm, like a lot of guys, going to get something if it's free and I'm in the store already. But you're inviting people to go in the store more often looking for the freebie we want. However, we're not buying other stuff if what we want is gone and you're not offering a rain check or something similar to what the special is! I have so-many freebie screw drivers, flashlights and other things that I have enough for gifts for my kids for their birthdays and Christmas!

Yes, businesses don't have to offer freebies; Harbor Freight Tools can require a purchase like a lot of the coupons require, and Harbor Freight can require a minimum amount of money spent on a purchase. But if they can't keep the freebie in stock, then the store managers should really offer a comparable item, even if they have to make their own signs and set a minimum purchase amount!

For instance, I have been looking for the four-plug extension cord since the freebie ad first came out. But they have had the six-plug cord. Why not offer that cord?

Another item is the flashlight that goes around your head like a miner uses. It's never in. But another one is available. Why isn't that offered?

Harbor Freight is advertising a six-inch magnetic screw holder as a freebie. I haven't seen any space for it where it is supposed to be displayed. Why isn't the four-inch magnetic screw holder offered? Or the 12-inch magnetic holder with $8 to $10 purchase, which is about the difference between the advertised six-inch and the 12-inch item?

If nothing else, your employees could be told to complete an online customer rain check to reserve the item from the next delivery for those customers that ask about the missing freebies!

That is why I'm giving Harbor Freight my time rip off award for this weekend!

The Harbor Freight Dapping Punch and Die Set

I have not needed a dapping punch and die set but I've always wanted one to play with when coming up with jewelry designs. A Dapping set is a tool that allows you to hammer metal into hemispherical and generally concave shapes, such as a hollow bead. A good quality setisn't terribly expensive and I have made my own single purpose punches and dies when the need arose but I never bought a set. Anyway, Harbor Freight has a set, made in India, for the extremely low price of $29.99, on perpetual sale. So I bought one.

The box looks nice!

A wood stand, the block and the punches.

The punches are covered in what is likely a highly toxic red oil.

I slit the bag open and grabbed each punch in a paper towel, wiping off the excess oil.

At first glance the block looks well polished...

But, as with most cheap tools, what you get is what you paid for, so there are numerous scratches, dings, blemishes and such in the hollows of the block. These can be polished out, so in essence you are trading your time perfecting the tool for the money you would have spent on a better set.

The punches are similarly imperfect, with flat spots, scratches, etc.
Some time spent sanding those out on the lathe is likely in my future.

So, not a great tool, but one that allows you to do basic doming without breaking the bank.

Harbor Freight Pinball Lift Modification

Buying and selling pinball machines gets more complicated when you factor in how to move them.  After collecting machines over the last few years, I found myself with 10 machines packed into my house.  This summer my wife and I moved and getting the machines to the new house seemed like a daunting task.  It was time to invest in a pinball lift!
There is a great thread on Pinside documenting the many different ways to modify the Harbor Freight hydraulic lift tableinto a suitable pinball lift.  The primary issue with the lift table is that the handle that extends up from the cart does not allow the table to slide under the table far enough to be centered under the machine.  As a result, many people have modified the handle in one way or another to allow the cart to slide to the center of the machine and lift it safely.
Before settling on my modification, I tried a few that others suggested.
1. Hinge Mod – place door hinges on the cart and attach the handle so that it can swing up and down.
This mod would have worked well, except for the release cable even after being re-routed was a little too short to fully extend the handle after it was attached. I considered just getting a longer cable from a local bike shop, but the hinges were already showing signs of bending so I decided to attempt the pipe-fitting mod.
2. Pipe-fitting mod – place new 45 degree pipe fittings into the holes where the handle should go and then place the handle into the pipe fitting.
After purchasing all of the suggested parts from Lowes and took them home to discover that the threaded ¾ nipple would not fit into the handle receiver on the cart. With some force, i was able to force-thread one of the nipples into the opening though it wasn’t a secure fit. Once I attached the handle it easily came loose on one side. I suppose I could have messed around with this some more and found different pipe sizes to make this work, but I decided to try something different:
I made a trip to my local bike shop an picked up:
1. A new brake release cable
2. A kid’s bike brake lever
I affixed the brake lever to the pump handle receiver and attached the new cable to the hydraulic release under the cart. The brake cable’s length was about 12 inches.
Moving around the pinballs after getting them up in the air was easy and I used the machine itself to move it around instead of a handle. There was no worry of the machine coming off of the platform as long as I got it close to centered under the machine
I was able to move 8 machines out of my old house load the all up into a 16 foot box truck and get them into my new house. Hope this helps someone out there!

Men’s AW14 Checked Tailoring Trend: How To Wear

Check Yourself
As we all know, trends come and go each season. And although there are certain styles that never fall out of vogue, it’s easier to buy into the look when it’s considered a ‘trend’ as there are suddenly far more options available.
This is why we’re so pleased to see check patterns remain popular for AW14, especially across tailoring. Here at FashionBeans we have a preference for timeless sartorial style, which checked suits and separates definitely embody.
With this in mind, today we’re taking a look at the presence of checked tailoring on the autumn/winter 2014 runways, before breaking down the key pieces you need to try the look out yourself this year.
On The Runway
As always, the best place to start when it comes to tailoring is with the British heritage brands found on Savile Row. From Richard James to Chester Barrie, checked tailoring made its way into several AW14 collections, coming in the form of elegantly-cut jackets, trousers and outerwear featuring oversized windowpane patterns.
Elsewhere, Hackett continued the revival of this time-honoured motif through traditional glen plaid fabrics, while Richard Nicoll also applied windowpane variants to suiting.
Naturally, Alexander McQueen took a more rebellious, punk-inspired approach to the trend, showcasing a vibrant double-breasted check suit in pink and black:

Outside of the UK, a wealth of grey checked tailoring was spotted on the AW14 runways at Brioni, Bottega Veneta, Trussardi and Michael Bastian, while sharp tartan separates were also popular at Boglioli and Corneliani:

Now you’ve seen it on the runway, it’s time to find out how you can incorporate checked tailoring into your winter wardrobe. Whether it’s through a full suit or separates, we’ve got it covered…

Below are 3 Tips for Dressing sharp as a young man.

Tip #1 for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Dress Your Footwear Up

Starting from the ground up, appropriate-fitting footwear is the first step to dressing sharp. A traditional school of thought that’s still alive and well claims you can judge a man by his shoes. If you’ve never owned really good shoes before, brace yourself and get ready to pay a significant amount of money for well-made, classic footwear. You may be shocked at the sticker price for well-crafted shoes, but the quality and comfort pay dividends down the road. A good pair of dress shoes will last you years and stay good-looking with nothing more than some light cleaning and the occasional shine. Quality leather footwear isn’t a luxury for the excessively rich — it’s a necessity for any man.
Classic footwear is just as important as classic clothing
Tip #2 for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Dress to Look Older
The way you dress is the way you are perceived. If you’re still wearing clothes that scream “student days” you’re going to be treated like a boy with no experience in the real world. Buck the trend, age your look a little, and get the respect you deserve from older men. That means raiding your wardrobe and getting rid of the majority of your ultra-casual clothes: T-shirts, cargo pants, jean shorts, sweatshirts and sweatpants, baseball hats, and athletics. Save a few for yardwork and exercise — but donate the rest of it to charity and start replacing it with dressier clothes that speak to your maturity.
Mark Zuckerberg’s not hurting for cash, but it’s still hard to see him as a grown-up in jeans and performance fleece.
Tip #3 for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Ignore Fashion Trends.
Main-stream fashion trends change too fast to make useful wardrobe staples. Most young men don’t have the budget to buy new pants every month or two — so stay away from pants that are only presentable during an “in” season. Distressed or bleached jeans are a great example; several different designer labels briefly managed to sell the image on the public, and then the fad changed and left a lot of people with very expensive jeans too beat-up to wear in public. Stick to classic clothing staples for the core of your wardobe and avoid anything that’s too far out on the cutting edge — even if you see something that makes it look good.
Models get paid to make goofy clothes seem reasonable. Don’t fall for it.

SAYONARA SUMMER: TRANSITION YOUR SHOES INTO FALL

Remember how excited you were when you first bought those adorable flats, slip-on sneakers, and short boots for the summer season? Or maybe they’re about to make their way into your shoe wardrobe because you know they’re perfect for these last weeks of warmth and cooler fall months…
No matter how long you’ve been rocking these awesome shoe trends, we’ll show you how to style them with finesse as you transition into fall.

The Fierce Flat

Flats in fun prints like leopard and dressy materials like patent leather can easily make their way into your fall wardrobe. Try pairing them with cuffed boyfriend jeans for relaxing weekends or trips to the grocery store. You can also sport colored tights or knee-high socks and your flats with mini corduroy and button front skirts for a playful style. If the tights look isn’t your cup of tea, slip into a more comfortable day look and wear your flats with skinny black pants and an over-sized sweater.

The Stylish Sneaker

They may have been great with cut-off shorts and capris during summer, but those fun fashion sneakers from brands like Vans, Converse and XOXO will need a little revamp for fall. Combine them with slim fit trousers or skinny pants, a cashmere sweater and a trench coat to give off a classic, yet cool vibe. Then, for a work-ready outfit with a pop of personality pair your slip-on sneakers with a modern suit and simple top. Your coworkers will be copying your look in no time.

The Short Boot

Long flowy summer dresses and short boots transition flawlessly into fall when topped off with a laid-back blazer or jean jacket. You can also wear your favorite pair of lace-up boots with ribbed or patterned tights to keep your legs warm as the weather turns cooler. Just add a casual black dress and you’re set. When you’re out shopping or hopping from coffee shop to office to home try this genius combo shown below. Skinny jeans in a dark wash, a chambray shirt, an anorak jacket and an interesting bib necklace all mesh well with short boots.

Cheap-Ass Tools: Harbor Freight’s Multifuntion Power Tool

Don’t have $400 to shell out for a Fein Multimaster? Don’t even have $100 for Dremel’s Multi-Max? How ’bout $40 for Harbor Freight’s Chicago Electric knock-off? I can’t imagine the build quality falls anywhere in the range of the Fein and Dremel, but hey — if you’ve got $40 you can find out.
It delivers 19,000 oscillations per minute (compared to as much as 21,000 for the Fein and Dremel). But that’s where the similarities end. While the Fein kit includes a ton of sanding, sawing, and other accessories and the Dremel ships in a variety of kits, the HF model ships with a couple of saws, one cutter, and two sanding sheets.
But here’s the real downer: While the Fein and Dremel offer variable-speed settings, you get just an on-off switch with the HF special. And we’re betting that’s a real deal-killer on this tool, which is designed for fine, delicate work.
