Harbor Freight Tools opens first Staten Island store

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Harbor Freight Tools, a national discount tool retailer, is opening its first store on Staten Island in Mariners Harbor on Tuesday.
With 500 stores nationwide, the California-based company is expanding in the Northeast. The new Mariners Harbor shop, at 2295 Forest Ave., will employ 35 to 40 people, according to a spokesman for the company.
"We're thrilled to be opening our 22nd Harbor Freight Tools store in New York, and very pleased by the warm welcome we've received in Staten Island," said Eric Smidt, president of Harbor Freight Tools.

"At Harbor Freight, we're all about delivering high-quality tools at ridiculously low prices. We do it by manufacturing our tools at the same factories as the expensive brands, but we cut out the middle man and pass the savings onto our customers," he added.
Smidt said the company's secret to providing low-priced merchandise is its investment of "millions of dollars" to build and operate state-of-the-art quality test labs.
"We ensure that we're constantly driving quality at the lowest possible price. We invite everyone in the Staten Island area to visit our store, and see why if you buy tools anywhere else, you're throwing your money away," he said.
While the store will be open to the public on Tuesday, the official grand opening is Oct. 8. There will be a parking lot sale Oct. 10 through Oct. 12 to mark the store's opening.
